Is coffee good for you?

By Viki Garbett

There are few morning rituals as comforting as that first cup of coffee. But how much is too much — and when does a daily habit become a health concern?

Even after 12 hours there is still a quarter of the caffeine in your body. While some people fall asleep easily after consuming coffee, the real concern involves sleep quality, particularly deep sleep disruption. The second cup consumed too soon after the first is where many people start to feel the difference.

Why coffee can be good for you

The following benefits apply to freshly ground, quality coffee — not instant versions.

Antioxidant content — Coffee contains chlorogenic acid, which protects cells from free radical damage caused by pollution and smoke.

Physical performance — Consumed before exercise, it enhances stamina and energy output.

Mood enhancement — Coffee stimulates the central nervous system, promoting serotonin release and improving alertness.

How much is too much?

UK health organisations, including the FSA and NHS, recommend approximately 400 milligrams of daily caffeine for adults. Practically, this means a maximum of two to three quality cups daily. Consuming more risks heart palpitations, nervousness, and sleep disruption.

Excessive consumption can also interfere with GABA neurotransmitters — the inhibitory compounds that regulate mood and the nervous system — causing jitteriness, elevated heart rate, and sweating.

Sweetening options

For those who prefer a sweeter cup, cinnamon powder adds flavour without excess sugar and offers anti-inflammatory benefits. Honey provides antioxidants and antibacterial properties, though it remains calorie-dense — use it mindfully.

My personal recommendation for quality beans: North Star Coffee Roasters from Leeds. Your morning ritual is worth doing well.
