We are so used to having lazy mornings and lots of sleep in the Christmas break that returning to the January routine can feel genuinely difficult. Dark, cold mornings make the adjustment harder still. If you’re struggling to get back into the swing of things, you are absolutely not alone — and there is nothing wrong with you.
January often comes loaded with pressure: lose weight, get fit, be more productive, spend less money. The internal voice that says “new year, new you” can quickly become unkind if the first few weeks don’t go perfectly to plan.
A gentler approach to January
Start small — Rather than overhauling everything at once, choose one or two things to focus on. Small, consistent steps outperform dramatic gestures every time.
Be kind to your body — After weeks of rich food and disrupted sleep, your body needs time to recalibrate. Nourish it with colourful, whole foods, plenty of water, and earlier bedtimes.
Protect your mornings — Even five minutes of quiet before the day begins can transform how you feel. A short stretch, a moment of gratitude, or simply sitting with a warm drink without your phone.
Acknowledge what you achieved — Before racing into what’s next, take a moment to appreciate how far you came in the year just ended. Progress is rarely linear, but it is almost always there.
Hello New Year. Please be kind — to us, and we’ll try to be kind to ourselves in return.
