Why do we need to give ourselves permission to have a bag of sweets or a glass of wine? The habit of labelling foods as “treats,” “naughty,” or “sins” is so ingrained in our culture that most of us don’t even notice we’re doing it. But this language can have a real impact on our relationship with food.
Categorising foods as forbidden or earned “rewards” actually amplifies cravings and can trigger binge-eating cycles. When something is off-limits, it becomes more desirable. When we finally “allow” ourselves to have it, we often overindulge — and then feel guilty, which restarts the cycle.
What can we do instead?
- Educate yourself about food and nutrition — knowledge replaces fear
- Listen to your body’s signals and natural rhythms throughout the day
- Ask yourself regularly: “What do I actually need today?”
- Examine your language patterns around food — notice when you use guilt-loaded words
- Reframe nourishing meals as treats — because they genuinely are
- Consider what emotions you may be addressing through food
